Transcendence
Set of 3 woodcuts, laser-cut birch plywood, ink on paper
22 x 30 inches, 2023

The prayer rug for Muslims is a gateway for the in-between realms of reality and something beyond. A prayer that moves from the heart to the mind to the tongue to God directly. This transcendence is what I am trying to capture through these prints. There is an in-between space that people of faith live in; a lens through which ordinary things can be seen as magical or have a connection that is rooted outside of this world. Through print, I am really trying to answer the question: how can I show something that is unseen? Experimenting with the subtlety of colors obtained by layering of transparencies, patterns with no beginning or end, and borders that act as a gate I am solving the problem of how I can portray to others what it feels like to be living both in the consciously and unconscious realm.
