Artist Statement
Sehrish Hussain's artistic practice is rooted in her upbringing as a Pakistani born and raised in Metro Detroit. Immersed in a rich tapestry of cultural motifs, from Indo-Persian textiles to the distinct aesthetics of "American-made" muscle cars, Hussain's work blends traditional printmaking techniques with contemporary digital technologies to investigate notions of belonging, tradition, and hybrid identities.
Hussain’s proclivity towards pattern, color, and post-painterly abstraction has become the driving force behind her practice. Abstraction and illegibility allow her work to defamiliarize viewers of cultural symbols and showcase the power objects hold as carriers of cultural meaning and memory.
Currently pursuing an MFA in Print Media at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Hussain creates work that functions as both personal archive and cultural investigation. Her practice navigates the space between tradition and modernity, where the past and present engage in continuous dialogue.
